I told my husband this is the “lamest, most genius game I’ve ever created”. Really though, it’s so simple, but it involves using a number line which is such an incredible tool when learning addition and subtraction.
Get 4 pieces of paper and tape them side by side so you have one long paper (or use a sentence strip or long paper). Write numbers 1-20 in 20 different boxes in chronological order. In a few of the boxes write things like “+ 3” or “-5”. I also wrote lines with arrows for addition on the top and on the bottom to visually help your child add and subtract. This is optional. See my story highlights on instagram for a more close up of my game board if this is confusing (link is below).
Get one die and some little figurine toys for your players. To play: roll the die and move the number it shows. Whoever gets to 20 first wins!
Bonus activity:
If this game is too easy for your child, try it to 50 and use two dice!
WHY?
Games are always fun for kids! And the visual number line really helps children with their conceptual understanding of numbers. It’s such an important tool in helping your child’s development in number sense! Talk aloud when it’s your turn. If you’re on 5 and you roll a 3, say aloud, “5 plus 3 is 8” and things like that to really maximize the learning here!
