Animal Sort

Thursday, April 2, 2020

I’ve always had a love for sorting! I was always incorporating sorts into the classroom when I taught elementary school. It’s such an important skill and it’s so easy to create opportunities for your kids to sort. This activity was designed for my little 2 (almost 2.5) year old daughter Brooklyn (who loved it so much she did it over and over again).

Grab a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side write “animal” with a little picture. On the other side write “not an animal” with a little picture. Next put some toys and objects in a bin (some being animals and some not) and let your kids sort! If you don’t have animal figures you could always print pictures of animals/things that aren’t animals.

Bonus Activity:

Let your child come up with something to sort around the house!

Other sorting ideas: colors, uppercase/lower case letters, fruits/vegetables, animals with 2 legs/4 legs, numbers greater than/less than 10, shapes, etc.

WHY?

Sorting is a fundamental skill needed to be successful in math. Sorting things as a toddler helps them begin to understand how things are the same and different in the world. By sorting, your child is already beginning to “compare and contrast” by putting things into different groups or categories. Children are also drawn to sorting activities and find it really fun! You might already see your child sort things on their own when they’re playing!
