How Tall am I?

Thursday, April 2, 2020
Trace your child’s body on a big piece of paper. Choose a few things that they will use to “measure” themselves. I chose legos, cars, markers, little people, and magnet tiles. Have your child estimate how many of a certain item will be needed to line the length of their body. Write it down. Then let them line the items up and count the actual number. Record it and repeat with a different object.

Bonus Activity:

Get a ruler or measuring tape out after and measure in inches or centimeters too!

WHY?

 Non-standard measurement (using
things that aren’t typically used for measuring) is a great way to start to introduce measurement to little kids. Non-standard measurement makes learning measurement fun and hands on and more meaningful to young children who aren’t ready to grasp standard units of measurement.
