Is your child learning to read? Switch it up with some hands on post it word family fun! ⠀
⠀
Word families are a group of words that have a common pattern or groups of letters. Some common word families include all, ap, at, ay, in, op and ot. ⠀
⠀
💜On a piece of paper, write out a word family multiple times (I did -at), with enough room for a post it to fit in front of it. On post its, write different letters (some that will make a word family word when you put it in front and some that won’t). ⠀
⠀
Let your child manipulate the post its to see which ones make words in that word family! Depending on where your child is at with their reading, you might be modeling it and doing it with them, or they might be doing it independently and reading them. ⠀
⠀
SIDENOTE: Please don’t push this on kids that aren’t ready. There’s a big “normal” range of when children developmentally are ready to learn the ABCs and learn to read. Learning the ABCs early is not an indication of future academic success! @busytoddler shares a ton of great information about this topic if you’re interested! These ABC/beginning reading activities I post are supposed to be fun and engaging, so if they aren’t appropriate for your child, just skip the activity or change it to a way that works best for your child!⠀

Learning word families when learning to read is important because it helps your child see and analyze patterns in words.
